George Mason University Completes Energy Action Plans for Three Virginia Municipalities

Arlington, VA — George Mason University’s Local Climate Action Planning Initiative (LCAPI) announces the completion of Energy Action Plans for Henry County, City of Danville, and City of Martinsville. The Energy Action Plans can be found on the LCAPI website.
The LCAPI works with Virginia municipalities to conserve energy, reduce costs, and ensure more resilient communities. The LCAPI consists of faculty and students who work closely with local governments and communities in three phases:
(1) Researching the history and background of the municipality and identifying key community stakeholders.
(2) Modeling the municipalities’ greenhouse gas emissions and other risk factors.
(3) Conducting public meetings with key stakeholders to evaluate and select goals, strategies, and actions to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate and increasing energy costs.
George Mason University’s outreach effort with Virginia communities is aimed at assisting vulnerable and marginalized communities throughout the state in accessing state and federal funds for the transition to reliable and affordable clean energy generation, as well as co-benefits from cleaner air and more resilient communities. The university offers this service at no cost to disadvantaged areas and communities.
The university worked closely with local government officials and community members from Henry County, City of Danville, and City of Martinsville, as well as using student teams representing the fields of science, policy, and communication.

George Mason University Completes Greenhouse Gas Inventories for Three Virginia Municipalities

Arlington, VA — George Mason University’s Local Climate Action Planning Initiative works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout Virginia by working with local governments, with particular focus on disadvantaged areas and communities, to accomplish two critical tasks.
(1) Assist local governments in developing or updating their greenhouse gas inventories.
(2) Develop climate and energy action plans to identify cost-effective, feasible, and equitable actions and projects across key sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollutants.

This year, George Mason University will convene a series of public meetings comprised of key community stakeholders to inform, educate, and reach consensus on energy and climate goals, strategies, and actions. The university will produce a draft climate and energy action plan for the three municipalities.
