George Mason University Completes Greenhouse Gas Inventories for Three Virginia Municipalities

January 9, 2024

Arlington, VA — George Mason University’s Local Climate Action Planning Initiative works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout Virginia by working with local governments, with particular focus on disadvantaged areas and communities, to accomplish two critical tasks.

(1) Assist local governments in developing or updating their greenhouse gas inventories.

(2) Develop climate and energy action plans to identify cost-effective, feasible, and equitable actions and projects across key sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollutants.

George Mason University outreach effort with Virginia communities is aimed at achieving reliable and affordable clean energy generation, as well as co-benefits from cleaner air and more resilient communities. The university offers this service at no cost to disadvantaged areas and communities.

The university worked closely with local government officials from Henry County, City of Danville, and City of Martinsville, as well as using student teams. The GHG inventories can be found here.

This year, George Mason University will convene a series of public meetings comprised of key community stakeholders to inform, educate, and reach consensus on energy and climate goals, strategies, and actions. The university will produce a draft climate and energy action plan for the three municipalities.
